Love as a cliché, love as a figment of fantasy, love on the off-chance: this evening of experimental theatre revolves around the greatest opera theme of them all, and the entire Tischlerei is given over to the production. The work springs from an eclectic body of literary and musical studies in love that include Oscar Wilde's artistic fairy tale »The Rose and the Nightingale« and Jean Genet's novel »Querelle«. The entire musical genre is on a quest here for the lost land of love or aleatory chance encounters.

The work develops ideas ranging from intimate monologues to multimedia installations featuring simultaneous scenes on two screens. LOVE AFFAIRS is the result of a collaboration between twelve young drama professionals, all grant recipients of the "Musical Theatre Academy, today" the Deutsche Bank Foundation – composers, directors, dramatic advisors, conductors, set designers and culture facilitators.

A cooperation of Deutsche Oper Berlin with Deutsche Bank Stiftung.
Presented by Siegessäule.

Prestigious opera scene Deutsche Oper Berlin has commissioned four chamber operas with 2 composers: Dariusz Przybylski and Birke J. Bertelsmeier. The pieces were premiered on the 20th of June 2014 by soloists, children’s choir and the musicians of the Deutsche Oper Orchestra. The subject of 4 independent operas is love – a very trivial, yet a current and actual theme.

Dariusz Przybylski cooperated with two directors: Margo Zalite and Felix Selier. Zalte suggested the beginning of a musical theatre should be left to chance. Two Queens fight for attention of…Childen’s Choir. The musical story is balancing on the edge of aleatory and fantasy.

Seiler on the other hand, proposes a drama of three opera divas: Evita, Maria and Annie. A musical kaleidoscope revolves around musicals influenced by works of Arnold Schoenberg’s taste (who also is to be seen on stage).

Birke J. Bertelsmeier works on musicalizing Oscar Wild’s “The Nightingale and the rose” and “Querelle” by jeane Genet with team of directors: Tilman Hacker and Nina Dudek.
